This was basically one of the best books I have ever read. The writing is exquisite, perfectly balancing the quaintness of simple, everyday life on Guernsey Island with the horror of WWII and the island's frightening occupation by the Germans.
There is also a subtleness this book contains which I think is somewhat lost in most books written today-there is no need for rampant sexuality or crudeness of language (not that I'm a prude-I enjoy some naughtiness in my reads just as much as the next person ;) but I do think it's admirable and beautiful that Shaffer is able to keep us so involved in her story without using those means.
